Eight new, dirty coal plants have been proposed in Michigan and the first one just received a permit to begin construction. If you believe that Michigan's energy future needs to go in another direction by investing in renewable energy, energy efficiency and green manufacturing jobs then join us and learn how you can join the fight. The agenda will include:
Solar Pool and Hot Water Heating with Donna Napolitano Fee: $10 minimum donation requested Solar hot water heaters use the sun to heat either water or a heat-transfer fluid in collectors. A typical system can reduce the need for conventional water-heating by about 2/3’s. This seminar will explore solar hot water systems as well as solar pool heating systems which are not only better for the environment but can also extend the length of the swimming season. Donna Napolitano has been involved in the Solar Industry since 1982. She is co-owner of Mechanical Energy Systems, Inc., located in Canton. MES specializes in thermal solar applications including solar water heating, solar air heating and solar pool heating systems. ********** Saturday, July 19th, 2pm – 8pm Pine Ridge & Rosebud Reservation benefit with the Stone Peoples Lodge * Fee: Cash, Clothing and Other Donations Appreciated The EAC is pleased to host a benefit event to support the Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations in South Dakota. From these Lakota reservations come the traditions and spiritual ways that inspire many of us. Every year, members of the local community go to Pine Ridge to be a part of the sun dancing ceremony. This year, we are hosting a community pot-luck and drum circle to send prayers and support to the sun dancers and the reservations– so bring a healthy dish (preferably vegetarian) to pass, and something to make music with! We are asking for donations in the form of cash, clothing and other necessities for the reservation. For more information, please email lodgecouncil@gmail.com.” ********** Sunday, July 20th, 11am – 6pm Midsummer Medicines... Michigan's Medicinal Plants with Jim McDonald * $50/$40 in advance The summer sun draws forth the medicinal virtues of many plants that grow in field and thicket; join herbalist Jim McDonald to explore the medicinal virtues, identification, folklore and preparation of many of the beautious wild weeds surrounding Upland Hills EAC in Oxford . The information presented will be both specific and practical, based on Jim's fourteen years experience in gathering, preparing, and using herbal remedies, and provide a basis for participants to incorporate what they have learned into usable skills with which to maintain and restore health. Some of the plants to be covered include Yarrow, Wild Bergamot, Motherwort, Saint John's Wort & Ox Eye Daisy. Jim McDonald has been practicing the Art of Herbcraft for over fourteen years, and offers a knowledge of herbalism that blends western folk and indigenous views of healing with the Vitalist traditions of 19th century western herbalism. He has taught classes and workshops throughout Michigan and the Great Lakes bioregion, hosts the website www.herbcraft.org and is currently writing "A Great Lakes Herbal". Jim is a community herbalist, a manic wildcrafter and medicine maker, and has been an ardent student of the most learned teachers of herbcraft... the plants themselves. * Sponsored by Living Free Foundation. Many thanks to Lesli Cohen. ********** Saturday, August 9th, 2008 1pm-3pmLessons from the Zero Energy Home with Christina Snyder Fee: $10 minimum donation requested Christina Snyder presents the results of the Lawrence Tech. University students’ entries in the State of Michigan Zero Energy Home Competitions. Participants will discover how the lessons can be applied to owner’s or renter’s home construction and remodeling projects now, as well as future directions to explore in sustainable design. Christina Snyder is an architect and principal of Sustainable Spaces, where she specializes in appropriate architecture, such as passive solar design, natural building materials and systems. She is an adjunct professor (at Lawrence Tech. U.) to the first and second place winning student teams in the first Michigan Zero Energy Home Competition. ********** Saturday, September 13th, 2008 1pm-3pm Explore Your Renewable Energy Options with Wayne Appleyard Fee: $10 minimum donation requested This workshop is designed for anyone, homeowner, builder, design student, or small business owner who may be thinking about how to reduce dependence on grid energy. Participants will learn how to assess needs, explore conservation measures, and evaluate cost-effectiveness and feasibility for renewable energy options including solar, (passive vs. active) wind, geothermal, radiant floor heat and other alternatives. Site analysis, remodeling, maintenance, "nega-watts" and solar space-heating will be among the many topics covered. Wayne Appleyard is an architect and co-founder of Sunstructures Architects. He has been designing energy-efficient, passive solar buildings since the mid 70s. Early work included the Upland Hills Awareness Center and countless passive solar houses. More recent projects include The Leslie Science Nature House, Michigan’s first two cohousing communities: Sunward and Great Oak. Current projects include a CoHousing development for Corktown in Detroit; two strawbale buildings; The Parsons Center, a multidisciplinary environmental center for EMU and the conversion of a 50 year old factory in Detroit into a high school. |
